The Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting will turn three years old on July 1. Our programs are going strong, growth and progress are good and we have big plans for the future. We won’t celebrate while the crisis persists but we are proud of the work we do and hopeful about demonstrating impact moving forward. During the past 12 months:
Our Credible Messenger Reporting Project supported more community journalists and professional partners. We held our first Film Festival and convened our first Link-up and Info Session. We have more reporting teams, a new film fest and an enhanced podcast coming together now.
Our research collaborative published our first study, recently introduced the next one and has six more in progress. Watch the webinars in our multimedia section and check our media mentions to learn more about our groundbreaking first report, which focused on the harmful effects of news reporting.
We supported journalists already covering the topic with our first Better Gun Violence Reporting Workshop, follow-up virtual sessions, a networking event, and by supporting external educational opportunities. We plan to convene our next workshop this fall and a national conference this spring.
We now have a staff of four, a dozen critical consultants, a network with dozens of active partners and a growing list of funders. We have supported more than 100 individuals, mostly from impacted communities, plus four interns and we hope to bring in our first fellow soon. We have visited numerous colleges and universities, professional organizations and newsrooms, either virtually or in person to share our work. And we won our first journalism award.
During the past year we took part in events with the Association of Health Care Journalists, the International Communications Association, Report for America, The American Psychiatric Association, the Law And Justice Journalism Project, the Council on Criminal justice, the Full Frame Initiative and Klein News Innovation Camp at Temple University. This summer we will introduce our work in sessions at national conferences held by the National Association of Black Journalists, the Online News Association.
