Kicking off: The core team behind our new documentary The Second Trauma introduced our work during the Crime Coverage Summit organized by the Radio Television Digital News Association and National Press Foundation here in Philadelphia.

For medical professionals: PCGVR director of research Dr. Jessica Beard joined an expert panel of healthcare providers for a webinar discussing the gun violence epidemic from a public health perspective.

Researching PCGVR: Prof. Patrick Walters of Washington & Lee University published a new study examining our Credible Messenger Reporting Project.

Master class: PCGVR research director Dr. Jessica Beard joined several of our favorite reporting partners to discuss best practices on a webinar hosted by the National Press Club Journalism Institute.

Checking in: The Association of Health Care Journalists hosted a webinar examining outcomes from our first Gun Violence Prevention Reporter Certification Workshop a few months earlier.

On the road: The School of Communication at American University in Washington hosted a screening of The Second Trauma, the first stop on our tour with the Logan Center for Urban Investigative Reporting at Temple University. We also visited the NBC4 Washington staff and newsroom.

Behind the scenes: Lehigh University profiled Prof. Jennifer Midberry, who is also our journalism research coordinator, on her work addressing gun violence and the role of the media. Dr. Midberry has since joined the faculty at Temple University.

On tour: We joined the Logan Center for Second Trauma screenings at Tufts University near Boston and then at Morgan State University in Baltimore, the largest of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities.

Reaching out: PCGVR staffers Maxayn Gooden and Oronde McClain took part in an NBC10 Listens Tour event at The Met in North Philadelphia.

Recognition: Work produced with PCGVR support was nominated in three categories of the 2024 Philly News Awards.

Honored: PCGVR journalism research advisor Dr. Jennifer Midberry was recognized with the Klein-Carnell Rising Scholar award during the 26th Annual Klein College Graduate Research Forum at Temple University.

Our biggest event: We premiered The Second Trauma and presented several panel discussions at the Temple Performing Arts Center, in partnership with the Logan Center for Urban Investigative Reporting.

In the classroom: PCGVR Credible Messenger community manager Maxayn Gooden visited with students in Prof. Florence Madenga’s course: Black Journalism and Philadelphia, at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

On the air: Loraine Ballard Morrill, director of news & community affairs For iHeartMedia’s six Philadelphia radio stations, discussed The Second Trauma with PCGVR staffers Jim MacMillan and Oronde McClain for a segment which aired on their network.

On the road: The School of Communication and Media and Montclair State University was the next stop on our tour with The Second Trauma.

New research: Two new studies led by PCGVR Director of Research Dr. Jessica Beard were published.

Recognized: We were delighted to spot our guidance incorporated into the new criminal justice reporting chapter of the latest edition of the AP Stylebook, arguably journalism’s most essential reference. Unofficially, we got a couple of signals suggesting we may have also informed last summer’s historic Surgeon General’s Advisory flagging media harm while declaring firearm violence in America to be a public health crisis.

We introduced our best practices guide, representing five years of work in one concise guide; free to view and download.

Published: Better Gun Violence Reporting: A Toolkit for Minimizing Harm was informed by dozens of Philadelphia journalists and even more community stakeholders. We have handed out hundreds of copies during journalism conferences and site visits. Hundreds more have been downloaded from our site.

Big Apple: PCGVR research director Dr. Jessica Beard took part in a panel at Health Journalism 2024, the annual conference of the Association of Health Care Journalists in New York City.

In the news: The Association of Health Care Journalists reported on the panel we joined at their national conference in New York City: Why gun violence is a public health emergency.

On the radio: Loraine Ballard Morrill of iHeartMedia shared a new interview with Angela Wade, who appears in The Second Trauma, discussing the life and loss of her son Joseph Emanuel Daniels III. She also interviewed PCGVR director of research Dr. Jessica Beard about our two new studies and the new reporting toolkit.

We spotted our guidance onscreen, along with that of some like-minded organizations, during a presentation by editors from the Associated Press Stylebook team that produced the new criminal justice reporting section, during the Investigative Reporters and Editors national conference in Anaheim.

In the spotlight: Several new articles from esteemed organization highlighted our recent research, including Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center, the Gateway Journalism Review and Columbia College.

Step-by-step: The Reynolds Journalism Institute published “Getting started with a gun violence prevention beat,” with several references to our Center.

Community-informed: We posted “Life Without Her,” a project from our former Credible Messenger Reporting Project, which we have been transitioning into a new project coming early in 2025.

Research conference: PCGVR newsroom liaison Oronde McClain and some of our favorite partners participated in the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication national conference in Philadelphia.

In the spotlight: PCGVR director Jim MacMillan and research director Dr. Jessica Beard discussed gun violence, prevention and the role of the media on The Trauma Beat podcast with journalist, trauma researcher and author Tamara Cherry.

New national network: In the spirit of professional media organizations such as the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Society of Environmental Journalists, four gun violence reporters posted across the U.S. have created the Association of Gun Violence Reporters for purposes of networking, skill sharing and camaraderie.

Expanding operations: We were delighted to introduce two new staffers joining our team at PCGVR: Caroline Suárez has been sharing her expertise in community engagement, media and journalism to support several key initiatives. As digital content strategist, John Paul Titlow has been the organization’s online content strategy and publishing operations.

On the road again: Several members of our team were honored with the opportunity to visit the University of Missouri School of Journalism in September. We screened our collaborative documentary The Second Trauma in five classes and then during a public evening event hosted by the Missouri student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. We handed out more than 100 copies of our Better Gun Violence Reporting Toolkit and engaged in conversations with nearly 150 students and more than a dozen faculty members and deans.

Big ideas: We also announced new event and hiring plans and will have more info early in the new year.

New webinar: Community Voices of Healing, Reflection and Hope is a new podcast from our Credible Messenger Reporting Project. Host and executive producer Maxayn Gooden interviews and facilitates conversations among other members of the survivor community in Philadelphia, taking the time to share their experiences in a safe place and in extraordinary depth.

New documentary check in on PCGVR: “Run, Hide, Fight: Growing up under the gun,” is a new documentary produced by PBS News Student Reporting Labs and featuring stories produced by 14 young journalists from around the country, including an interview with PCGVR director or research Dr. Jessica Beard. Behind the scenes: The student producer who interviewed Dr. Beard shared some kind and encouraging words in a new op-ed published in Teen Vogue.

On the road: PCGVR visited the University of Scranton for a screening of The Second Trauma, in partnership with the Logan Center for Urban Investigative Reporting at Temple University.

Follow us: We closed all of our other social accounts and concentrated our efforts on Bluesky.

Demonstration: We previewed The Survivor Connection, a new tool that will help reporters put the survivor community at the center of their coverage. The public launch will take place early in the new year.

Outreach: PCGVR director Jim MacMillan introduced our work and hosted a screening of The Second Trauma at the Law & Justice Journalism Project convening in New Orleans.

Spanning the globe: PCGVR director of research Dr. Jessica Beard discussed our work on Radio France International.

Getting together: The new Association of Gun Violence Reporters hosted a local gathering in Philadelphia.
